When he eventually retired from the Air Force, he joined his father-in-law’s company. Ray Broce’s daughter went to K-State and later met and married Bud Vance. In 1963, Ray Broce formed a new company, Broce Manufacturing, to build and sell “Broce Brooms.” Eventually the family closed the construction business to focus on manufacturing. It worked so well that other contractors saw it and wanted one also. Broce Construction crews used it that summer. That was the beginning of the self-propelled mid-mount sweeper which would revolutionize that part of the industry. The question arose: “Wouldn’t the broom work better if we put it in the middle of the machine where the operator could see it and make adjustments?” The guys went to a salvage yard, got an automobile frame and engine, and mounted the industrial sweeper broom in the center of the machine. That made it difficult to simultaneously steer and adjust the equipment. At that time, a road sweeper was usually towed behind a truck or tractor. During the winter of 1961, Ray Broce and his mechanics had time in the shop to think about how to improve their road construction process. Of course, the process of building roads and applying asphalt is typically done in the summertime. It’s important that the road surface be just right. In the road construction process, a roadbed base is built and then swept clean immediately before adhesive and asphalt is applied. “Someone estimated that half the roads in Oklahoma were built by Broce Construction,” Alan said.įrom 1973 to 1975, the National Asphalt Paving Association presented its highest award for construction projects to Broce Construction – the only company in history to win the award three years in a row. Broce became the largest road construction company in Kansas and Oklahoma. Ray Broce grew the Broce Construction Company into one of the leading road construction businesses of its era. “He mortgaged his home and bought his first piece of construction equipment in 1937,” Alan Vance said. Broce worked for the Kansas Highway Department and then went into business for himself in Dodge City. The history of this company goes back to Alan’s grandfather, Ray Broce, who was born in 1902 in the rural community of Attica, population 626 people. Mark Chalfant is chief operating officer. Where do you suppose that sweeper was built? Would you believe, halfway around the globe in Kansas? Today we’ll learn about a remarkable ruralpreneur and his company who is building these sweeper machines for markets across the nation and beyond.Īlan Vance is CEO of Broce Broom, the company which produces these industrial sweepers. An industrial sweeper is being used to prepare the road surface for the application of asphalt. DeMille took the familiar story and made a big, melodramatic epic that’s more operatic than merely cinematic. It never occurred to me as a kid, but of course The Ten Commandments was airing on Easter because the holiday usually coincides with the celebration of Passover: The story of the children of Israel being led out of slavery in Egypt and into freedom in the Promised Land is celebrated during Passover, and that’s the story of The Ten Commandments. But I’d nestle into the couch and munch on a chocolate bunny while I watched Charlton Heston, playing an impossibly blue-eyed Moses, confront Pharaoh and part the Red Sea. I never got to watch the whole thing, because inevitably I missed the start time. (It’s been airing since 1968, and this year it’s on the night before Easter.) It’s one of my favorite childhood memories: Every year on Easter, after the family festivities were over, I’d go downstairs and turn on our big old TV set, and ABC would be airing The Ten Commandments. The movie of the week for April 15 through 21 is The Ten Commandments, which is available to digitally rent on Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, YouTube, and Vudu. What you can count on is a weekend watch that sheds new light on the week that was. Old, new, blockbuster, arthouse: They’re all fair game. And this is a big film.Every weekend, we pick a movie you can stream that dovetails with current events. Biggest may not always be best, but sometimes just being the biggest is enough. B.'s legendary large head as anyone could wish for. A kind of celluloid Las Vegas, lighting up the desert sky with an overwhelming sense of its own importance, finally it's as fine a tribute to C. Somehow, despite all its obvious crassness, The Ten Commandments is a great film. DeMille's lavish canvas may be vulgar, shallow and pompous (the director himself provides the scene-linking self-righteous commentary), but it would be impossible to imagine any other actors doing better than Heston and Brynner as Moses and the Pharaoh, nor any other director but DeMille powering the story forward with the kind of vain, simplistic arrogance that only an old-fashioned true believer could bring to it. William Wyler's Ben Hur (1959) and Stanley Kubrick's Spartacus (1960) are much superior films, but both their stories are smaller and even parochial by comparison with this. The special effects and colour may now sometimes seem garish and lurid, but in terms of performance and sheer matinee-level entertainment, this holds up much better than most other religious epics. The various plagues visited on Egypt, the Exodus of over 12,000 extras, the pursuit by Pharaoh Brynner's chariots, the famous parting of the Red Sea, the Pagan revelries around the Golden Calf and Charlton finally taking his tablets are big, big sequences served up by DeMille in his supreme master showman manner. It's very easy to snigger at The Ten Commandments' occasionally inane dialogue ("Oh, Moses, Moses, you stubborn, splendid, adorable fool!" is probably the worst excess) and oak panelled plotting, but what justifies the film is DeMille's gigantic self-confidence in taking on such a huge subject, reducing it to his typical formula and then triumphantly delivering the goods in terms of lavish spectacle and deeply chiselled morality. The story may be familiar, but DeMille rams it home as though he were telling it for the first time with his camera platform as a pulpit linked up by a direct line to the Deity. Listing "The Cavalry Corps of the Egyptian Armed Forces" among its opening credits, introduced by DeMille in person in a strange Cold War prologue as a celebration of "the birth of freedom" (His hint to communists: "Are men the property of the State or are they free souls under God?") and with Charlton Heston not only playing the part of Moses but also, via some electronic reprocessing, providing the Voice of God, it's a truly monumental film. With its exteriors filmed on location in Egypt and at a total cost of $15 million, there's nothing at all modest about this movie. Just as Hitchcock implied suspense and Lubitsch sophistication, DeMille stood for spectacle in an era when these were virtually the only three directors whose names meant anything to the general public.ĭeMille crowned his services to the Cinema of Excess with his 1956 remake of The Ten Commandments. DeMille: the name is a kind of instant shorthand for Hollywood in all its brash vulgarity and meretricious splendour. Read on for our original review of the Xbox One release by Sam White. A distinctive lack of depth, personality and creativity keeps it firmly in the realm of mediocrity. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t still the worst entry in the series by quite a wide margin.īeyond mindless zombie murder, Dead Rising 4 simply fails to rekindle any of the flames that made the original trio of games so compelling and fun to play. If anything, Capcom Heroes is an unfortunate reminder of the properties I’d love to see Capcom revisit instead of poking at the shambling corpse that Dead Rising has become.ĭead Rising 4: Frank’s Big Package is an exceptional port of the original package, with additional content that fans will have a blast with. You also lose access to some of Frank’s unique abilities when thrashing about as other, more likable icons. It grows stale far too quickly, and having to grind through the entire campaign with a limited set of costumes can make certain encounters a needless chore. Hurling hadoukens as Street Fighter’s Ryu and darting across Willamette as Mega Man is fun at first, but once again lacks any sort of substantial depth to keep things interesting. The biggest new addition to Frank’s Big Package is Capcom Heroes, a version of the solo campaign that has Frank West donning the costumes of iconic gaming heroes. But, considering his constant quips, I was more than happy to feed him to the undead anyway. Franks feels like he’s running through treacle, which makes using the camera around large groups of zombies an unpleasant experience. On the bright side, Dead Rising 4 runs almost flawlessly on Sony’s console, with no performance problems at all in my playthrough. Instead, you level up far too easily, and dispatching enemies is so trivial that it hardly feels like a difference has been made. There is little reward to be found in exploring the city of Willamette, which is a shame because seeing the original setting enhanced into a massive playground had so much potential. Survivors and psychopaths, major parts of previous titles, have been reduced to meaningless map icons and generic bullet sponges that feel completely soulless.Ĭombat feels similarly gutted, with powerful weapons and skills being handed to you in the opening minutes. With the exception of a few skill trees, everything else has been streamlined to a glaringly obvious fault. The moment-to-moment gameplay of Dead Rising 4 is perfectly serviceable but is so lacking in depth that I found it difficult to get invested. It’s also hard to take what little story there is seriously when Frank struggles to stop making sex jokes amongst the unusual mannequins playing the role of NPCs. His character is terrible, and not at all reminiscent of the cult personality we’d come to love from past games. Sadly, Frank’s Big Package is still the same creatively bankrupt outing we saw almost a year ago, with a few extra goodies thrown in.įrank, the veteran journalist beloved for his silly demeanor and awkward dialogue, is now nothing more than a walking cliche, with each remark worthy of a pitiful groan. It’s bundled with new modes and all previously released downloadable content, but does the previously mediocre zombie slasher hold up any better? Having released exclusively for the Xbox One back in December 2016, Capcom is celebrating the festive season once again with the launch of Frank West’s latest adventure on PS4. Fauna's age of four and a half billion years is around the age of the planet Earth, when it first coalesced from galactic dust and early life began to develop. However, like Gawr Gura, Ninomae Ina'nis, Takanashi Kiara, and Nanashi Mumei, she reads her name in Eastern order, which has confused some of the JP members into calling her "Ceres-chan." Fauna considers her last name to be too formal to use in conversation. It is also a name of Roman origin, as the name of a goddess of animals, nature, spring, and fertility, and is used as a female given name. "Fauna" is an English word referring to the animals of nature. It is also the name of a dwarf planet or large asteroid. The name "Ceres" refers to the Ceres ancient Roman goddess of agriculture and fertility.Fauna appears to be extremely protective of her fans and Nanashi Mumei to the point of possessiveness, and will not hesitate to switch to a more condescending tone when she encounters something unacceptable. Fans also quickly noted her striking resemblance to Yukihana Lamy in many aspects, from voice tone and motherly personality, to her overall nature motif. While she is usually affable, warm, and slightly mischievous, any who anger her will bear the full brunt of Nature's fury.Īt debut, Hakos Baelz described Fauna as a natural mama, a soothing beauty, and someone who gives the best headpats. Whether or not that is true is something only those who have heard them can say. It is long said that her whispers, as an avatar of Mother Nature, have healing properties. "Nature" refers to all organic matter on the planet except mankind. She has Kirin blood flowing in her veins, and horns that are made out of the branches of a certain tree they are NOT deer antlers. She has materialized in the mortal realm as a druid in a bid to save nature. 【DEBUT STREAM】Mama Nature □ -hololiveEnglish -holoCouncilĪ member of the Council and the Keeper of "Nature," the second concept created by the Gods. The Android app supports syncing only with Dropbox and via a downloadable plugin, but the iOS version of the app plays nice with most of the other major cloud services. What's more, Polaris Office on Android lags behind its own iOS version in terms of cloud support. Nor does it include a track changes features – Apple's Pages is one of a few mobile apps that boasts this feature. While Polaris Office can show comments which are already on a document, as I’ve already mentioned, you can’t create new ones. This strikes me as odd because it seems more likely that you'd be working on an existing document from your phone, rather than making one from scratch. Polaris Office is a well-made app, but it's clearly designed with document creation and not editing in mind. Comments, for instance, can only be seen in "memo" view, and the "replace" function is not immediately obvious when selected. These are welcome additions for any editor, but both could use more work. Polaris Office also includes a robust find-and-replace feature, and the app can read (but not add) comments on a document. While in presentation mode, you can also use a faux-laser pointer and draw directly on the presentation (see the below image). Once you've selected your function, you can tap a cell to add it to the equation, and a ribbon of operators makes it easy to complete your mathematic construction. The app includes a large array of spreadsheet functions in the Fx menu. One interesting feature of Polaris Office is that any document or highlighted text can be read back in text-to-speech (TTS in the app's menu), potentially making it more accessible to users with disabilities. Unfortunately, you'll have to provide your own means of projecting the presentation. The app also includes a presentation mode so you can run a PowerPoint show from your phone. Slide elements can be edited simply by double tapping them, and slide notes – to aid a presenter – were a cinch to find, and clearly linked to specific slides. I was particularly impressed with how easy it was to create PowerPoint presentations in Polaris Office. Polaris Office is much more straightforward and does a good job of staying out of your way so you can focus on work. This is a welcome change from OfficeSuite Pro, which uses a small toolbar ribbon for some options and nested menus for others. When I went to change the colour of cells in a spreadsheet, I saw the same interface that I used for changing paragraph options with text documents. Many of these menus are the same, or similar, when working with different document types, making for a consistent experience across the app. These scanned checks are then delivered to the customer via CD or uploaded to a portal that the customer can view. Some lockbox services provide more than a delivery address and processing of checks.Ībility to view scanned checks - If the bank is set up for it, it can scan high volumes of checks using optical character recognition (OCR) software. Theisen continued, “It also deters theft, fraud, and error by reducing the number of employee touches on each transaction.” Additional benefits provided by lockbox services Most accounts receivable frauds occur when one individual controls the entire process. There are more people involved, which splits the payment cycle across multiple people. Because invoices go out from the business but payments come in at a bank and are handled directly by bank employees, fraud is more difficult. “Not only can we process payments faster, but mail that is sent to lockboxes arrives more quickly because of the special ZIP codes,” as stated in a press release by Keith Theisen, executive vice president and director of product management at Wells Fargo’s Treasury Management Group.Īs an example, if the company is located in New York but the customer is in San Francisco, the company can provide the customer with the closest West Coast lockbox address, speeding up the delivery of payments.Ī lockbox service can also work as a fraud deterrent. Large company with customers all over the USA can provide their customers with the lockbox address that is closest to them. They are also distributed regionally or throughout the USA, depending on the bank. Lockbox services have special zip codes, which allow mail to be routed to them faster. From there, bank staff picks up the contents several times per day, bring them to the bank at which the merchant has an account, and process all the checks. Customer payments arrive just like regular mail. Instead of mailing payment to a merchant, customers mail it to the merchant’s lockbox address. Only authorized personnel have access to the lockbox contents. The service was called a lockbox since it is a physical location to which mail can be sent. There’s also the occasional hassle of checks getting lost in the mail.Ī few decades ago, banks created a service to solve the inefficiencies of processing paper checks. Checks must be mailed, collected by staff, entered into accounting software, potentially scanned for auditing, and finally stored or destroyed. Of all the forms of B2B payments, checks are the most laborious to handle. What is a lockboxĪ 2017 B2B payments survey conducted by found that checks account for 50 percent of B2B payments. In this article, we’ll look at how they work. Lockbox services basically offload paper check processing. Once the check arrives, the bank processes it. A lockbox is basically a post box for a business to which customers can mail their checks. Once it arrives, it must be processed by the recipient’s accounting department.įor a long time, banks have offered a solution to this problem: lockboxes. When a B2B customer mails a check to another B2B company, there’s a mail delay as the recipient waits for the check to arrive.
